ACCESS PLATFORMS

ACCESS PLATFORMS

A BENCH, A CHAIR, A LADDER OR TWO LADDERS WITH A BOARD BETWEEN THEM. THESE ARE CONSIDERED ACCESS PLATFORMS, CRUDE, UNSAFE BUT EFFECTIVE. WE DO NOT CONDONE THE USE OF THESE BUT WERE MERELY TRYING TO MAKE A POINT. THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL AN ACCESS PLATFORM.THE POINT IS IF YOU NEED TO GET OFF THE GROUND TO ACCESS SOMETHING OVERHEAD YOU HAVE WHAT IS CALLED, AN ACCESS PLATFORM. It CAN BE SCAFFOLDING, SCISSOR LIFT, BOOM LIFT OR PERSONNEL LIFT. There are many different names associated with the different lifts but they all have one thing in common and that is to access your overhead needs.

This shows a person working on a building using an offset scaffolding frame

This shows scaffolding spanned over seats to Access lights above. This is a versatile access platform

You have a church with lots of pews and lights above and they need to be changed, what do you do? There are a few options remove the pews and drive a scissor lift or boom lift in as long as the floors are level to access your lights. If the floors are not level then that throws those access platforms out. The other idea is to leave the pews in place and use lightweight aluminum scaffolding that can go up and over the pews. This is achieved by either adjusting the legs out or offsetting a frame, if the floor is really sloped.  Now you have an access platform that will work without having to remove the pews which saves time and energy.

Let’s say your a homeowner who wants to access the side of his two-story building to painted it.  Well you have many choices of access platforms. You can use a boom lift if the ground is solid enough or a scissor lift if the ground is solid or a ladder or scaffolding. All of these are very useful access platforms it just depends on how much you want to spend and how much time you have. This is why you should call a professional to looking at your job and suggest the proper access platform.

When using access platforms please refer to the instruction manuals for any questions or call your representative. If instruction manuals do not come with equipment please call and ask your representative for them or check the equipment before they leave. Any reputable company will go over the proper use of your access equipment with you as well as answer any questions you may have.

If you have any questions regarding access platforms please feel free to give us a call at 707. 799. 8902. We want to make your overhead access needs safe and compliant with all applicable safety rules and regulations.

Upright Scaffold North America Adjustable Leg

Upright Scaffold North America Adjustable Leg

Adjustable leg:

What is an adjustable leg? Upright Scaffold North America adjustable legs are used to level scaffolding on uneven surfaces. They also are used for getting over objects but never use the adjustable legs to gain height. If you need to gain height either raise the platform up or add another section. The adjustable legs are only used for leveling scaffolding or getting over objects.

Adjustable leg scratches:

Upright Scaffold North America adjustable legs can be released for a rapid adjustment by lifting and twisting the knurled ring. This will release this split threaded nut letting the leg slide out easily. Gravity itself should let the leg slide out but if it doesn’t, we have an obstruction. The adjustable leg is being held by either debris, dent in the frame or an over adjusted set screw. When pulling this adjustable leg out I keep feeling something dragging over the threads and then I could see evidence of scratching. At this point you would back off the set screw and the adjustable leg will slide out easily. Upright Scaffold North America suggests that when installing or readjusting the set screw you want to stick your finger up inside the frame of the scaffolding. If you feel the set screw going pass the inside wall of the frame back the screw off till it is flush with the inside wall of the frame.

THESE ARE SCRATCHES CAUSED BY SET SCREW BEING OVER TIGHTEN

Upright Scaffold North America suggests that you wipe your adjustable leg down with the light lubricant. This prevents oxidization and also helps in sliding the leg in and out of the frame. We also suggest that you take time to read your Safety manual http://uprighYestsna.com/safety/. If you have any questions please feel free to call us at 707. 799. 8902 and ask for Joe foot.

THIS SHOWS THE SCRATCHES CAUSED BY OVER TIGHTENING THE SET SCREW

Adjustable leg conclusion:

If you’re having a problem with your adjustable leg sliding out easily one area to check is the set screw. Back the set screw off and try to slide the leg out. If it will not slide out easily now; there is another issue which will be discussed in another blog. We now hope you understand one issue that can happen to your adjustable leg if you over tighten the set screw.

COUPLER

COUPLER

COUPLER

I am going to present one COUPLER. Which  can be used as a right angle COUPLER, in-line COUPLER or a swivel COUPLER.  You can do this just by adding or removing a roll pin.

WHAT IS A COUPLER?
A Coupler is a device that joins (couples) tubing together by griping around the tubing.  The type of Coupler we are going to discuss works with 2” O.D. Aluminum Scaffolding and tubing. Most Couplers come either as a right angle Coupler, in-line Coupler or swivel Coupler.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF COUPLERS:
There are three types of couplers, the right angle Coupler, In-line Coupler and the swivel Coupler. If you wanted to join two pieces of aluminum tubing at right angles you would have to buy a right angle Coupler and the same if you wanted to join two pieces of tubing parallel to each other you would buy an in-line Coupler and the same for a swivel Coupler.

ONE COUPLER THAT DOES WHAT THREE COUPLERS DO:
This is what I call a Universal Coupler. It can be configured as a swivel Coupler, a right angle Coupler and an in-line Coupler by just adding a roll pin in the proper hole for right angle Coupler setting or in-line Coupler setting. To use as a swivel Coupler you just remove the pin and the two halves swivel.

CAUTION:
Most Aluminum Scaffolding uses thin wall tubing .058 wall thickness. That is the reason for the wing nut for tightening. If you use a wrench to tighten the coupler DO NOT over tighten or you may crimp the Aluminum Scaffolding tubing.

— USES:
Have you ever had a job that you cannot access with an Aerial Work Platform or with your standard Aluminum Scaffolding?

What you need is a special Access Work Platform.

You might need to have a special Access Work Platform built which would most likely use Couplers or you might be able to use your existing Aluminum Scaffolding with just the purchase of some Universal Couplers, some heavy wall Aluminum tubing and maybe some extra frames.

The NASA AMES 40 by 80 wind tunnel use standard Double Wide Aluminum Frames with 10’ platforms and bracing along with swivel and right angle Couplers to span completely around the 40’ turbine engine.

There were a lot of swivel couplers used on this project 40 x 80 wind tunnel at NASA Ames

The Tibetan Gallery was just a standard six foot Aluminum Scaffolding Tower with a platform height of 17’ 6” and no outriggers. The Aluminum Scaffolding Tower was supported by special made brackets mounted to the wall and tubing with just the Universal Coupler used in its right angle and swivel Coupler settings.

CONCLUSION:
When the Aerial Work Platform does not work take a look at using your existing Aluminum Scaffolding and either renting or buying the extra scaffolding pieces and Couplers to access the job.

Aluminum Scaffolding, Short Pin Interlock Clips

Aluminum Scaffolding, Short Pin Interlock Clips

Aluminum Scaffolding, Short Pin Interlock Clips

Short pin interlock clips what are they used for?Short pin interlock clips are used on your aluminum scaffolding to hold the frames together. Short pin interlock clips are easy to use and field replaceable if lost.

aluminum scaffolding

How to use your short pin interlock clips:

There are two holes at the top of each frame. The bottom hole is used to hold the interlock clip while not in use. The top hole is used to connect the two frames together with the short pin interlock clip. You will notice on the short pin interlock clip that there is a positioning line. This line should be at the bottom of the short pin interlock clip when positioning it in the top hole or bottom hole. If the positioning line is at the top of the short pin interlock clip, the clip will not be able to fit into top hole. This is due to the pin being offset making a clearance issue between the short pin interlock clip and the bushing of the scaffolding frame.

The short pin interlock clip is made to stay on:

The short pin interlock clip is made of sprung steel. The reason for this is for the ability to pull the clip apart a bit and slide it down into the bottom hole or up into the top hole without having to pull it off the scaffolding. This is why the ends of the short pin interlock clip are bent inwards. This gives you a place to grab when pulling the pin apart as well as preventing it from coming off the scaffolding frame.

Conclusion:

Short pin interlock clips are used on your aluminum scaffolding to hold the frames together. Always use short pin interlock clips that are made for your brand of aluminum scaffolding. Do not use other items to hold your frames together for example nails, screws, miscellanies metals, etc.

Aluminum Scaffolding Fixed in Field

Aluminum Scaffolding Fixed in Field

How many times have you broken a tool in the field and had to either stop what you were doing to go to town and either buy a new one or take it to someone that can fix the item. I think we all have been there at one point in time. The components of the Aluminum Scaffolding that get the most use and wear and tear on the job site are repairable in the field. For this you will need the spare part with you for immediate repair but you won’t have to tear the Aluminum Scaffolding unit down and take it to town. You will be able to fix it in the field or replace the broken part in the field.

The casters, platforms, adjustable legs and leg lock assembly on your aluminum scaffolding can all be replaced or repaired in the field. These Aluminum scaffolding components get the most use. Next are the Aluminum scaffolding end frames, guard rail frames, braces, toe boards, bushings and both long pin and short pin interlock clips. These items are not fixable in the field but are defiantly field replaceable. Some of the Aluminum scaffolding items can be salvaged and even bring you money to defer the cost of that broken Aluminum scaffold part.  If you damage a frame on the last upper rung down to where the next rung comes across just cut that part off at the top of the tee joint. Now you have yourself a short Aluminum scaffolding frame which can come in very handy. If for example you had a 6’9” extension frame and damaged the top section of the frame just cut that top section off. You now have a 5’6” Aluminum extension frame. Don’t throw that damaged Aluminum scaffolding part away keep it and recycle it for cash. Now you can go buy some beers with that new found money and recycle those cans as well. If you damage the whole Aluminum scaffolding frame take out the bushings and interlock clips and keep them for when you might need them and recycle the aluminum scaffolding frame for cash.

Aluminum Scaffolding Aluminum Scaffolding

The platforms standard and hatch door are designed so you can replace whatever section might be broken. You can replace the hooks, side and end rails, hatch door and the wood all in the field.

Aluminum Scaffolding platformhook

The leg lock assembly is also field replaceable by just taking out the Aluminum leg and the set screw on the side of the leg lock assembly and sliding the leg lock off the Aluminum base frame. If you damage a base frame salvage the adjustable leg, leg lock assembly and short pin inter lock clips. Then what do you do with the Aluminum scaffolding frame? You recycle your old aluminum scaffolding frames and offset your cost on replacement parts.

If you own aluminum scaffolding and want me to come by and look at it from a safety aspect regarding what pieces you should recycle and what pieces can be repaired as well as what you should salvage from the damage Aluminum scaffold sections just email me @ [email protected] or call 707-799-8902 (I am only able to visit companies in my geographical area. Because of computers and camera phones were able to do a lot without visiting your site.) When I inspect your Aluminum Scaffolding I create two areas, one is for what is good and you keep and the other area is for what should be scrapped / recycled. I then will work with your people to strip the scaffold sections of salvageable parts and make a list of what needs to be replaced. If you would like a quote on the Aluminum scaffolding replacement parts I will put one together for you to turn into your insurance agent and or place an order for some or all the broken parts so you can put your damage Aluminum scaffolding back to work for you.

That’s enough for now I will do a part 2 on “Aluminum scaffolding fixed In field” and we will cover outriggers, High Clearance platforms and toe boards.

ALUMINUM SPAN SCAFFOLD, HOW TO PROPERLY SET UP YOUR ALUMINUM SPAN SCAFFOLD

ALUMINUM SPAN SCAFFOLD,

HOW TO PROPERLY SET UP YOUR ALUMINUM SPAN SCAFFOLD

This pictorial and the attached video regarding “HOW TO PROPERLY SET UP YOUR ALUMINUM SPAN SCAFFOLD” are meant for you to copy and use when ever needed. You may also contact me, “Joe Foot” owner of UpRight Scaffold North America regarding “HOW TO PROPERLY SET UP YOUR ALUMINUM SPAN SCAFFOLD,” or anything else.

My phone number is 707-799-8902 or emails me at, [email protected]

If you watch the attached video you will see the proper way to set up you a 6’ single wide aluminum span scaffold. You will also see what not to do when setting up your single wide aluminum span scaffold.

This is how to properly set up your aluminum span scaffold;

  • Put the caster brakes on one of the single wide base frames.
  • Take your horizontal brace and attach it to the vertical tubing of the base frame above the fourth horizontal.
  • Rest the other end of the horizontal brace on the ground.
  • Get the other base frame and leave the casters unlocked for now. Roll the base frame over to the horizontal brace end that is on the ground and lift it up and connect the hook above the fourth horizontal rung.
  • Don’t lock the caster brakes yet on that frame.
  • Get a diagonal brace and snap the hook to the horizontal rung at the bottom of the frame (this is the frame with the brakes on).
  • Now take the other hook and snap it on the third horizontal rung from the bottom. You can move that frame back and forth to line up the hook in the same position that it is on the bottom rung.
  • Once you snap that hook LOCK THOSE CASTERS.
  • Now set your platform on the horizontal rungs

This concludes this portion and we would like to thank you for taking the time to look at my article.
