This article is to help you understand the different Aluminum scaffolding parts that go into your aluminum scaffolding. We will talk about new parts, old parts and if there obsolete and if so what replaced them.

CLEAN ROOM PLATFORMS Are all made out of aluminum. Platforms are usually made out of wood which is unacceptable in a clean room. Clean room platforms and the rest of the scaffolding structure is all made of aluminum and sometimes anodized. Because the scaffolding is made out of aluminum it is lightweight and able to move carefully around a satellite with only a few people moving and guiding the structure. The platforms are usually made out of diamond plate which prevents anything from falling through the platform. They also make dry platforms which enable water and moisture to pass through the platform. This makes for a slip resistant platform.

ACCESS PLATFORMS

A BENCH, A CHAIR, A LADDER OR TWO LADDERS WITH A BOARD BETWEEN THEM. THESE ARE CONSIDERED ACCESS PLATFORMS, CRUDE, UNSAFE BUT EFFECTIVE. WE DO NOT CONDONE THE USE OF THESE BUT WERE MERELY TRYING TO MAKE A POINT. THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL AN ACCESS PLATFORM.THE POINT IS IF YOU NEED TO GET OFF THE GROUND TO ACCESS SOMETHING OVERHEAD YOU HAVE WHAT IS CALLED, AN ACCESS PLATFORM. It CAN BE SCAFFOLDING, SCISSOR LIFT, BOOM LIFT OR PERSONNEL LIFT. There are many different names associated with the different lifts but they all have one thing in common and that is to access your overhead needs.

You have a church with lots of pews and lights above and they need to be changed, what do you do? There are a few options remove the pews and drive a scissor lift or boom lift in as long as the floors are level to access your lights. If the floors are not level then that throws those access platforms out. The other idea is to leave the pews in place and use lightweight aluminum scaffolding that can go up and over the pews. This is achieved by either adjusting the legs out or offsetting a frame, if the floor is really sloped. Now you have an access platform that will work without having to remove the pews which saves time and energy.

Let’s say your a homeowner who wants to access the side of his two-story building to painted it. Well you have many choices of access platforms. You can use a boom lift if the ground is solid enough or a scissor lift if the ground is solid or a ladder or scaffolding. All of these are very useful access platforms it just depends on how much you want to spend and how much time you have. This is why you should call a professional to looking at your job and suggest the proper access platform.

Abused scaffolding

HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN?

Damage scaffolding starts with abuse. Abuse equals misuse.

If a person does not know how to use something like upright aluminum scaffolding they will wind up misusing it and in turn damaging the scaffolding. The pictures below reflects this abuse. The damage to these parts were the result of someone not knowing how to use the scaffolding properly.

HOW TO PREVENT DAMAGE:

Read the scaffolding manual. It will tell you how to use the scaffolding properly. How to set it up properly and tear it down. The instruction manual will talk about scaffolding maintenance. Now taking 10 minutes to read this will save you a lot of money. Train your people on the proper use of the scaffolding. This will prevent damage due to not understanding how to properly set up and tear down scaffolding. Understanding how to use the scaffolding would prevent the above damage.

CONCLUSION:

We all spend a lot of money on scaffolding so take the time to read the instruction manual. 10 minutes of time can save you hundreds of dollars. Damaged scaffolding starts with abuse. Abuse equals misuse. So take some time to train your people on the property use of your scaffolding.

ARIEL WORK PLATFORMS / CASTERS IN DETAIL

Today’s work platforms, be it Platform Lifts, Aerial Work Platforms or Scaffolding and when I say scaffolding I’m talking about Aluminum Scaffolding. Now steel Scaffold use casters as well but not as often, the reason is that steel Scaffolding for the most part is stationary. What am I talking about? Well at the bottom of every Platform Lift, Aerial Work Platform or Aluminum Scaffolding there is something they both have in conman and that is Non Marking Wheels. Throughout the years and many customer complaints all Aerial Work Platforms went to the non marking tires for the simple reason not to mark up the customers floors.

This brings me back now to the Scaffolding aspect of this Blog and that is to show you the non-marking caster. Below I am going to break down the caster and show you the different features it possess along with pictures to represent what I am explaining.

Caster Sizes

The Aluminum Scaffolding Casters comes in two sizes 5” and 8”. The reason for the two different sizes is simple; the 5” caster is used primarily in doors because it gives the base section of either the single wide or double wide scaffolding a height of 6’ 6” just low enough to go under a standard doorway. The 8” caster is used mostly in open areas or outdoors. The larger caster gives you the ability to roll over cords and small pebbles that are often found in those work environments.

8 inch casters are used on job sites primarily for rolling over large wires and cords.

Caster Stem & Installing Caster

Next is the stem of the caster that has a detente pin that gets depressed when shoved into the adjustable leg of your scaffolding. There are two ways to install the caster. One turn the end frame upside down with the adjustable leg facing up and put the stem of the caster into the adjustable scaffolding leg and pull straight down on the caster while slightly moving it back and forth and it will go in. It is not easy and we don’t want it to be so is the reason for the tight stem fit and the detente pin. Because the caster is tough to install there was invented another way of putting it into the adjustable leg and that is to turn the scaffolding frame on its side and put the stem of the caster in on the horizontal plan and hit the bottom of the caster with a rubber mallet or sand filled one. If you need to use a regular hammer put a piece of wood between the hammer and the caster wheel this will protect the non-marking wheel from damage.

Caster Braking Mechanism

The braking mechanism has two positions, on or off. When the braking lever is pointing up it is in the unlock position. Notice in the picture how the hub of the caster is off set from the vertical member of the caster stem which is put into the bottom of the scaffolding frame. This gives the caster the ease of casting and swiveling when turning. This off set hub also prevents the wobbling you get when the hub is in line with the vertical member. A good example is when you push a shopping cart fast the front caster wobbles from side to side.

When the brake is put on you need to push it all the way down till you feel it click. You will see in the picture that the hub is now off center of the vertical caster stem just slightly in the opposite direction. So the more weight you put on the scaffold the more that wheel wants to be pushed back into the braking systems. As I tried to show in the picture the aggressive looking metal teeth that come into contact with the none marking wheel when it is move back under the vertical member of the scaffolding and then the hub or center of the wheel going just past the center of the vertical member and into the metal teeth which stop the rolling of the wheel. At the same time the wheel is going back another set of teeth come up and make contact with a set of teeth that are connected to the swivel portion of the caster as shown in the attached photo. This stops the swivel action of the caster. At this point your scaffolding may flex as you climb it but it will not move side to side or front to back at the base.

UPRIGHT SNA HATCH DOOR PLATFORMS

HATCH DOOR PLATFORMS:

What is a hatch door platform? Upright SNA will show you pictures of hatch door platforms, explain why they are used and their ability to be fixed in the field. Upright SNA hatch door platforms are made to climb through by climbing the frame of the scaffolding or climbing the snap in stairs.

UPRIGHT SNA HATCH DOOR REPLACEMENT BOARDS:

The manufacturers, we represent, use half-inch marine plywood mounted inside and aluminum structure. The two manufacturers Upright SNA represent are, EZ Lift and Vault manufacturers and they both use the same design. The one difference is that Vault shaves their platform board down on the ends of the platform boards to make the aluminum even that grips the ends of the board with the sides of the platform assembly. Just let us know if you have a Vault platform when calling to order.

The EZ Lift platform board does not need to be routed at the ends. You just need a half-inch marine plywood board and you’re set to go. This gives you the ability to either order the board from us or just go to your nearest wood supplier which will be a lot less expensive. You see we just save you money.

HATCH DOOR PLATFORMS FIXED IN THE FIELD:

On top and on the sides of the platform assembly you will find Allen bolts or some other type of screw/bolt fastening device. Remove the fasteners and either pull out the board or the hatch door board and replace. Instructions will be sent for replacement of boards by manufacture. Upright SNA always wants the customer to take time and read the manufacturers instruction manual which can save you time and money in the long run.

HATCH DOOR PLATFORM ACCESSIBILITY:

There are two ways to access the hatch door platform. You can either climb the frame of the scaffolding or you can climb up Snap in stairs. The reason you use a hatch door platform is to keep the worker on the inside of the scaffolding for better protection. The cost difference between a hatch door platform and the standard platform is a round $20-$30.

When using the hatch door platform on a single wide scaffolding tower you want to offset the hatch door from the one below. So to have a platform with a hatch door on the right side than the next platform up will be on the left side. The offsetting of the hatch door platforms is used for fall protection. Your platforms are to be placed every 10 feet. There are four reasons for this; one it’s used for an erection platform, two used as a resting platform, three used for fall protection and four, a work platform.

Upright Scaffold North America Adjustable Leg

Adjustable leg:

What is an adjustable leg? Upright Scaffold North America adjustable legs are used to level scaffolding on uneven surfaces. They also are used for getting over objects but never use the adjustable legs to gain height. If you need to gain height either raise the platform up or add another section. The adjustable legs are only used for leveling scaffolding or getting over objects.

Adjustable leg scratches:

Upright Scaffold North America adjustable legs can be released for a rapid adjustment by lifting and twisting the knurled ring. This will release this split threaded nut letting the leg slide out easily. Gravity itself should let the leg slide out but if it doesn’t, we have an obstruction. The adjustable leg is being held by either debris, dent in the frame or an over adjusted set screw. When pulling this adjustable leg out I keep feeling something dragging over the threads and then I could see evidence of scratching. At this point you would back off the set screw and the adjustable leg will slide out easily. Upright Scaffold North America suggests that when installing or readjusting the set screw you want to stick your finger up inside the frame of the scaffolding. If you feel the set screw going pass the inside wall of the frame back the screw off till it is flush with the inside wall of the frame.

THESE ARE SCRATCHES CAUSED BY SET SCREW BEING OVER TIGHTEN

Upright Scaffold North America suggests that you wipe your adjustable leg down with the light lubricant. This prevents oxidization and also helps in sliding the leg in and out of the frame. Adjustable leg conclusion:

If you’re having a problem with your adjustable leg sliding out easily one area to check is the set screw. Back the set screw off and try to slide the leg out. If it will not slide out easily now; there is another issue which will be discussed in another blog. We now hope you understand one issue that can happen to your adjustable leg if you over tighten the set screw.
